Night

such a common thing.

happens to everybody,

at least once a day.

whole brains, half brains

whole bodies, half bodies

even the half-born

but not the whole dead.

some livers are working

all lit up

each worker working

under a light of some sort,

the light we made trying to beat the dark.

but here it comes.

most will sleep it away.

there’s a land no one talks about,

where we spend

our lives with our eyes shut.

we’re all there together,

with our eyes shut.

but even dreams act like light

fingers prying eyelids half-open

to see in the shadows,

to see.
